I’m clearly trying to refine my tasting notes by using this new mini wine tasting journal from Steve De Long. Expect more refined & suggestive notes like “hints of cherry liqueur, orange peel and a soft breath of crushed redcurrants...”
Wine jokes aside, it’s ok to just say “this is a wonderful, hard-to-find drop of juicy red wine that tastes bloody good and doesn’t cost the earth...”

Ah my two favourite wine loves combined: Sangiovese and California. This is the majestic 30-year old 1993 Atlas Peak, with Sangiovese grapes planted high up on the Vaca mountain range in the glorious Napa Valley.
So what is it like at 30 years?
It’s pretty wild and it’s really very good. Fascinating. There is still fruit and perfume and it’s not overtly port like that old Brunello often steps towards. Quick decant to filter and served. Italian perfection on Californian soil. Tuesday night? Cheers.🍷🇺🇸

Where it all began!
This is the first #brunellodimontalcino I ever tasted, up on the hilltop, during a tour of Tuscany in 2016 (2011 vintage)! Wonderful to find this rare beauty again (a 2010, which was an excellent vintage in Montalcino), from the famed Pertimali slopes, the slightly lesser known Angelo Sassetti, with distinctive cherub label…cheers 🍷🇮🇹
